Carla Harting Appointed As School Superintendent

Board of Education members voted Tuesday night to appoint Harting, who replaces Patricia Cole, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

There's a new woman set to take charge of the school district.

 members promoted , the district's director of special education, to superintendent at Tuesday's board meeting.

The vote was 6-0. Trustee Kathy Bedikian was absent because she is ill. Board president Michael Swiecki said he spoke with Bedikian and she fully supports Harting's appointment.

The resolution to hire Harting states: “Clearly the candidate, Dr. Carla Harting, is the best, whether internal or external. With her administrative experience, knowledge of the district, central office experience in finance, law, personnel, labor and operations, and successful initiatives to improve student achievement, she is recommended as the new superintendent.”

Harting was given a three-year contract, effective July 1 through June 30, 2014. The salary was not disclosed at the meeting.

The position is open due to the  of current superintendent Patricia Cole, who plans to leave the district June 30.

When board members first started discussing the superintendency, Harting was the only person publicly mentioned as a candidate.

At Tuesday's meeting, board members continued their praise for Harting.

Treasurer Robert Kirby said she is a "special person" who will "do this district a very great service.”

"Carla brings a lot to the position," he said.

Swiecki said the timing is great in that it allows Cole several months to mentor Harting.

"We’re in the right place," Swiecki said. "This is the best thing we could hope for from a transition state."

As a board, he said, this appointment is the "single biggest thing we have done."

Harting, who received a standing ovation from dozens of district employees who were in the audience, said she looks forward to continuing quality education in Wyandotte.

"I’m just really excited about the opportunity to serve the district as superintendent," she said.
