District Officials Vote on Outsourcing Transportation

The proposal includes the sale of the district's current bus fleet to Trinity Transportation for about $275,000.

Wyandotte Public Schools Board of Education members voted in favor of outsourcing transportation Tuesday night.

Members voted 6-0 to a three-year contract with Trinity Transportation at a regularly scheduled board of education meeting.

Board vice president Chris Calvin said the decision to select Trinity over one other transportation company considered "came down to safety."

Trinity Transportation President Jerry Sheppard agreed to provide safety training to all drivers.

Calvin also credited the decision to Trinity being a local business, located in Wyandotte, and the amount Trinity agreed to pay for the district's entire fleet of buses.

"Hopefully were going to have that same service, and work together to make sure all the services wil be provided safely," Calvin said.

The annual cost for outsourcing district busing through Trinity was estimated to be about $275,000 for the 2013-14 school year, $283,000 for the 2014-15 school year and $292,000 for the 2015-16 school year.

The district will sell it's current bus fleet to Trinity for about $275,000.

District bus drivers are expected to be placed in positions within the district's operations department, according to Superintendent Carla Harting.

Sheppard said all bus aids will have the opportunity to be hired.
