Wilson Middle School Students Win Best in State in Verizon App Challenge

Five students from Wilson Middle School created an app that helps users through the difficulties of being a middle school student.

Students from Wilson Middle School took the best in state prize in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge.

Emily Sutka, Emily Dunnigan, Arianna Lister, Brian Shuryan, and Sheldon Clark created an app for a mobile device that helps middle school students through the difficulties of being in middle school.

The national competition sponsored by Verizon Wireless asked students to create an app that would solve a problem in their school or their community.

The winning app contained academic support for mathematics, emotional health support through bullying prevention communication tools, advice section on what to do in certain situations, and a physical health support section, according to a Wyandotte Public Schools release.

The wining students presented a YouTube video they submitted for the competition to board of education members last Monday.

Trustee Michael Swiecki said he was amazed at the students' ability to excel in such a complicated genre of creativity.

"I just learned how to text two years ago and these kids are making apps--amazing," Swiecki said.
