Barb Milewski, a member of the Purple Heart ladies auxiliary chapter, coordinated the effort. She said she asked for the school’s participation in order to reintroduce the writing challenge to the area. The contest has existed for several years within the Purple Heart, but not always at the local level, Milewski said.

“It’s important to have the program inside the schools to keep patriotism awareness (alive) for the schools,” Milewski said.

Mark Brooks, the father of Christopher Brooks, said his son has consistently been on the school’s honor roll since kindergarten. He said he is grateful to the Purple Heart for giving his son and the other students the opportunity to compete in the essay contest.

“I’d like to thank (the Purple Heart) for encouraging them to do this,” he said.
