It’s Band Sweetheart spirit week at Roosevelt High School as the 250 students in the instrumental music program — with 120 in marching band — continue the 59-year Sweet Week tradition.
Former Band Director Kenneth Hauer began Band Sweetheart 59 years ago. Each day during the week has a theme and students earn participation points for their section (clarinets, flutes, saxophones, high brass, low brass, percussion, strings, and color guard), said Mark D’Angelo, Roosevelt's director of instrumental music.
“At the Band Sweetheart football game on Friday, Oct. 19, the section with the greatest percentage of participation will be honored, as well as the crowning of the 59th Band Sweetheart and King Cutie,” D’Angelo said.
Last week, students voted for the 2012 Band Sweetheart Court -- Lauren Buchko, Spencer Genrich, Cameron Snyder-Pitts, Davey Gutenschwager, Garrett Waggoner and Ben Zang. On Thursday, the instrumental students will vote for the 2012 King Cutie and Band Sweetheart.
“This is a big tradition and the instrumental students take it very seriously,” D’Angelo said.
On Friday, 2011 Band Sweetheart Katey Meredith and King Cutie Drew McWilliams will return to present this year's crowns.
Next year is a milestone for Band Sweetheart, as RHS celebrates its 60th anniversary and invites back the entire past Band Sweethearts and King Cuties for a special pre-game reception.
In other band news, the Wyandotte Marching Chiefs are competing to secure a spot in the 2012 MCBA State Marching Band Finals at Ford Field on Nov. 3. The band performed Oct. 6 at Clarkston High School, and this weekend at Woodhaven.
The band also is competing to win the My TV 20 “Battle of the Bands” Bracket Challenge.
