Wyandotte Mayor Surprises Kindergartner at School

For career day at Garfield Elementary School, kindergarten student William Martin said he wanted to be the mayor of Wyandotte.

Wyandotte Mayor Joseph Peterson made a special trip to Garfield Elementary School Monday morning to pay a visit to a boy with big plans.

Kindergartner William Martin said he wanted to be mayor of Wyandotte someday and dawned a black suit, blue shirt and multi-colored tie for career day.

William's face lit up as Peterson walked into his classroom to meet the boy who might someday take over as mayor.

"This kid had the biggest smile on his face," Peterson said.

Peterson heard about William's plans for career day through a family member on Facebook and wanted to take the opportunity to encourage him to follow his dreams.

"I wanted to show him that a mayor is a leader in many ways and many duties," Peterson said.

Peterson also visited a third grade class after he was stopped in the hallway by a teacher who told him the third grade students were buzzing with news of the mayor visiting their school.

Garfield kindergartners began Reading Spirit Week Monday and read "Oh the Places You'll Go!," by Dr. Seuss, which inspired career day.

Kindergartners dressed up in costumes pertaining to the professions they might like to pursue when they get older, and William chose to be mayor.

"I'll remember that little kid for as long as I live and the smile on his face with his little, red cheeks," Peterson said.
