Wyandotte School Briefly Evacuated Friday Morning

One student was taken to an area hospital for treatment and the medical conditions of three others were assessed at the scene after a Roosevelt High School student accidentally discharged an over-the-counter pepper spray Friday morning.

The school was evacuated about 8:40 a.m. Friday, The News-Herald reports, but students and staff were allowed to return about 40 minutes later after Wyandotte Fire Department personnel completed a walk-through of the high school at 540 Eureka Road and determined it was safe for students to return to class.

Superintendent Carla Harting said the student who was transported to the hospital was evaluated by medical personnel, who said he had suffered no harm from the substance. His father brought him back to the school, Harting said.

The school followed its emergency protocol, notifying parents of the situation by email at 8:49 a.m.,. Automated phone calls also were placed/

During the 40-minute evacuation, students were relocated to a safe area. In a followup email to parents, Harting said fire department personnel determined there was no threat to student safety.
