Wyandotte School Superintendent Rated 'Highly Effective and Satisfactory'

Board of Education members scored Carla Harting on a number of characteristics over her first year.

If first-year school Superintendent Carla Harting had received report cards like students do, she would have had straight A’s.

members recently rated her as “highly effective and satisfactory” on her annual evaluation. Highly effective is the best rating possible.

Harting smiled as board members praised the work she’s done since

“I appreciate their support, but I am only as effective as the teachers and other staff members are,” she said. “I have a very good staff that supports me in what I am trying to do, which has made this year just an excellent year for me."

Board members individually ranked her performance in five areas: relationship with the board, community relations, district leadership, personal leadership and achievement of district goals.

All of the individual scores from the seven board members were tabulated and averaged to come up with her final ranking.

Board President Patrick Sutka said board members took the review process very seriously.

“I think we have a very sound and effective superintendent and look forward to continuing to work with Dr. Harting over the next couple of years,” he said. “We have many challenges in front of us."

Trustee Kathy Bedikian agreed, saying that she’s certain the district will continue to fare well with Harting at the top because every decision she makes has to first pass two litmus tests: "Its the right thing to do" and "It's for the kids.”

Board Secretary Chris Calvin said he appreciates that Harting is concentrating on all aspects of education.

"I'm really appreciating all of the new ideas that are coming around,” he said. “It seems to be more of a fun year and a lot of new ideas we can get around. It's been great. A lot of it has to do with the energy of the superintendent."

Vice President Robert Kirby said he likes the long-term planning that Harting has focused on in addition to running the district day to day.

“You're not just thinking about today,” he said. “I think you've done this district proud and this board proud."

Glad to hear it. I think she's done a great job, too.
