Wyandotte's Kindergarten Roundup Set for March 26

Wyandotte Public Schools is hosting a meeting for parents of children who will be 5 by Nov. 1.

Parents of soon-to-be-kindergartners: It’s time to think about that first day of school in September.

Wyandotte Public Schools is hosting a meet-and-greet next month for parents of incoming kindergartners.

Kindergarten roundup will take place at 1:30 and 5:30 p.m. March 26 at the district's four elementary schools: Garfield, 340 Superior; Jefferson, 1515 15th; Monroe, 1501 Grove and Washington, 1440 Superior.

While there are two sessions scheduled at each building, parents only need to attend one of them.

Parents will have a chance to tour the school and meet the kindergarten teacher, as well as other staff members. Registration packets also can be picked up or turned in, if already gotten from the school.

"Kindergarten Roundup is an opportunity to learn about your child’s school for the 2013/2014 school year," the district's web site says. "There will be time to ask any questions you may have about the school and district."

Here are the documents required at registration:

  1. Original birth certificate issued by a city, county or state entity
  2. Immunization record, including a vision check
  3. Three proofs of residency
  • One must be a current Michigan driver’s license or Michigan identification card
  • Along with two additional proofs, which could be two different utility bills, a mortgage or lease agreement, a pay stub, etc.

A new state law, however, has changed the age requirement for kindergarten. In order to enroll for the 2013-14 school year, students now must be 5 years old by Nov. 1. In years past, the deadline was Dec. 1.

Parents of a child with a birth date between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30 may still request a waiver for enrollment. Waiver forms may be requested at registration and must be turned in by June 1.
