Banners Unveiled for State Champ Hockey Team

Players from the 2010-11 Wyandotte Roosevelt hockey team were recognized Friday night for the squad's state championship season.

The 2010-11 hockey team was honored Friday night at for its unforgettable season. 

Before a 7:40 p.m. contest against Grosse Ile, the entire squad from last season was introduced, including members of the current team, all of last year’s seniors and the coaching staff.

Immediately following the introductions, banners recognizing last season’s Division 2 state title and were unveiled at the north end of the rink.

Fans cheered wildly as the banners were displayed, banners which will now sit as constant reminders of what the team accomplished.

, a 2011 Roosevelt graduate, was one of the former players recognized.

Last season, Mayhew scored 44 goals for the Bears and totaled more than 100 points. His play eventually earned him the 2011 as the best high school player in Michigan.

Mayhew said last season’s state title is something that can positively impact the current team as players learn from and build upon it.

“It’s a great experience for all of the young kids trying to repeat this year,” he said.

Mayhew has gone on to join the of the United States Hockey League, and is currently the squad’s leading goal scorer with 12.

, a 2011 graduate who shined as the team’s goaltender throughout the 2010-11 season, also was recognized. In the championship game against , he allowed only one goal, stopping 47 shots en route to the state title. 

Winning a state title is something he said he’ll always be proud of.

“It means everything,” he said. “Twenty years from now, I can look back and I have proof I was on a championship team.”

Also a football and baseball star at Roosevelt, Schmittou has extended his athletic career and is currently a member of the Macomb County Community College baseball team.

, another 2011 graduate, also has continued his athletic career and currently skates for the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings of the North American Hockey League. According to the team’s website, he has six goals and one assist so far this season.

The 2010-11 Roosevelt hockey team finished the season with a record of 27-3 and also was named an for its combined grade point average of 3.14.

By winning the championship last season, the squad brought home the first athletic state title in school history. A week later, the community and several local officials came out to honor the accomplishment with a and outdoor ceremony for the team.
