Fitzsimmons Takes Cheerleading Squad to the Top

Senior sideline cheerleader Kayla Fitzsimmons is one of the top performers on the Wyandotte squad.

Senior Kayla Fitzsimmons is a three-year member of the varsity sideline cheerleading squad.

Fitzsimmons and the sideline cheerleading squad work hard to perform perfect cheers, routines and stunts at every Friday night Roosevelt football game.

Cheerleading coach Elissa Cumiskey said Fitzsimmons is one of the team’s best tumblers, a skill that involves performing athletic flips and rolls.

Fitzsimmons also is one of the best flyers on the squad, Cumiskey said. A flyer performs stunts while elevated high into the air by teammates.

In addition to her athletic ability, Cumiskey said, Fitzsimmons also has served as one of the leaders of the 2011 squad.

Take Five with Kayla Fitzsimmons

1. Do you have a favorite subject at Roosevelt?

My favorite subjects are marketing/entrepreneurship and psychology.

2. How did you spend this past summer before cheerleading began?

We had conditioning during the summer and I just showed up to every practice and tried being a good leader, a good role model and to push everyone, including myself.

3. Where is your favorite place to hang out?

I don't have a favorite place to hang out at. I just like driving around and hanging out with my boyfriend.

4. What has been the best part of being a senior so far?

I love being a senior because a lot of the girls look up to me. This is my chance to show everyone I can help take my team to new heights by just pushing everyone to do their best.

5. What are your plans after graduation?

After I graduate, I plan on either going into the Army or one of the other armed forces. If I don't do that, I'd like to go to Eastern Michigan or Wayne State and study to be a gynecologist.
