Girls Hoops Squad Tips Off State Tourney

Bears travel to Gibraltar Carlson for district play on Wednesday.

This week began a very exciting stretch in high school sports–the basketball playoffs.

With that in mind, I’m dedicating this little column this week to the girls hoops teams who took the floor beginning Monday evening with the hopes of making a run at the game’s ultimate prize–a state championship.

What each of these local teams did in the regular season means little at this point, and with the one-and-done format of the state tournament, there is no room for a bad game.

I can’t stress to you enough how fun it is to get out to one of these postseason ball games.

The intensity is wonderful, the atmosphere is incredible and the tension is always high, as every possession is so important.

With that said, let’s take a brief glance at the district round of the 2011 girls basketball state tournament.

  • tips off the 2011 district round at Gibraltar Carlson at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Bears got a first-round bye and awaited the winner of the Trenton vs. Woodhaven game on Monday to see who they'll be matched up against on Wednesday. That's going to be Woodhaven, who beat out Trenton, 63-46.
  • Should the squad prevail Wednesday, they’ll move on to the district final at 7 p.m. Friday.
