Hockey Squad Falls, Cheerleaders Triumph and Hoops Team Prevails

Here's a quick look at the sports scene in Wyandotte.

For starters, thanks to everyone who chimed in last week about the new format of the Pick of the Week. I was glad to see so many great responses. Keep them coming, please.

There were lots of great ideas and suggestions from folks just like you about sports, events and sporting events that are on the horizon in the area. Plus, I got a chance to speak with some fans out there and get a better understanding of what you want to see in this column each week.

Thank you, once again.

Anyhow, on to the business at hand.

As the winter season winds down, many local teams are looking to jostle for positioning in their respective divisions, and, more importantly, get tuned-up for the state playoffs–many of which get under way in the next week or so.

We’ll get into the playoff stuff next week. This week, let’s take a quick second to look back at the week that was, then look at a couple of games that might be worth checking out in the days ahead.

  • Kudos to the Bears hockey squad who, despite a tough loss to Grosse Pointe South last week, are still atop the Michigan Metro Hockey League standings. Nicholas Kovalchik had a pair of goals in the 7-4 loss to the Blue Devils.
  • The Bears boys hoops team played well last week, behind Jett Cavazos’ 18 points.
  • Also, three cheers for the at Roosevelt who finished the regular season ranked in the top 10 in Division 2. The squad also fared well at districts last weekend, wrapping up that event in third place–good enough for a ticket to regionals. Way to go, squad!

Now, let’s take a quick look at what lies ahead.

  • The top-ranked hockey squad also sees some action this week, facing off against Edsel Ford at home at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday.
  • The boys hoops squad squares off against Allen Park High at 7 p.m. Thursday at home.
  • Last, but certainly not least, the competitive cheerleading squad continues its quest for a state title on Saturday in regional-round action at Allen Park High School. The squad will face off against some of the top teams in the state with the hopes of advancing to finals on March 5 in Grand Rapids. Stay tuned to the POW for more news.
