New and improved Pick of the Week takes sports fans back to the week that was, and ahead to the best matchups and events in town.

First of all, let me start out by saying a big “Thank You” to everyone who e-mailed in response to last week’s column. The response was really good, and as a result, this little column is going to be better.

Please keep these comments, suggestions and ideas coming.

Without your help, I can’t recognize any of the outstanding efforts put in by athletes all over the area—from the little ones all the way to our senior citizens. Everyone has a place on Wyandotte Patch and in this column.

  • All right, let me preface this week’s column by saying it’s all about hockey. There—I said it. The Bears were part of the prestigious MIHL Showcase this past weekend, and the did the city proud. The team skated to a 1-1 split at the event. A victory over Livonia Stevenson, 4-3, was followed by a narrow, 6-5 loss to Midland. Nonetheless, the squad did great against some of the best clubs in the state (and Canada). Way to go, Bears!

A Look Ahead

  • It’s back to work for the Bears this week with games against Grosse Pointe South (Wednesday on the road) and Southgate Anderson (Saturday at home). Both games get under way at about 7:30 p.m. The struggling Blue Devils appear to be nothing more than a warm-up for Wyandotte. Southgate Anderson currently sits in second place in the Michigan Metro High School Hockey League’s East Division, one game in the loss column behind the Bears. That said, it’s easy to see why this is a big game in terms of the team’s division title hopes.
  • I know, I said all hockey, but this is worthy of mention, believe me. The boys basketball team hosts Southgate Anderson on Thursday. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Roosevelt. Come and cheer on these young men. A tough loss to Carlson on Friday means the Bears will be hungry to please the home fans.
