Patch Picks: 5 Best Moments in Detroit Tigers History

Favorite moments of Wyandotte Patch readers include games played in 1968, 1984 and 2006.

For the first time since 2006, the Detroit Tigers are heading into the Major League Baseball playoffs. The postseason run begins in New York at 8:37 p.m. Friday. After a Saturday game in New York at Yankee Stadium, the Tigers return to Detroit to play Game Three of the American League Division Series at home.

We know Wyandotte is full of Tigers fans who will be cheering for the team this weekend. So, in honor of our American League Central Division champions, we asked Wyandotte Patch readers to tell us about their favorite moments in team history.

Here are five of the favorite moments in Detroit Tigers history picked by our readers:

1968 American League Title

Mike Dallos' favorite moment is being in attendance with his new bride when the Tigers clinched the American League pennant on Sept. 17, 1968. To win the game, Tigers player Don Wert hit a single in the bottom of the ninth inning to drive home Al Kaline and break a 1-1 tie with the New York Yankees. “We went down to the park on the spur of the moment and had a great time,” Dallos said. “(I) still have the ticket stub.”

1984 World Series

Wyandotte Patch fitness blogger said his favorite moment is Kirk Gibson’s second home run of Game Five in the 1984 World Series. The blast gave the Tigers a four-run lead over San Diego and essentially locked up a win in what was the final game of the series. “(I) remember watching that at my grandfather's house,” Navin said. “You knew that sealed the deal for the Tigers becoming World Champs.”

1984 World Series Celebration

An infamous celebration broke out in Detroit after the Tigers World Series win in 1984 and Amanda Baker was there to see it. As a young girl, she watched it all through a window inside her mother’s downtown Detroit workplace. “I was 4 yrs old and had a bird’s eye-view of all the festivities," Baker said.

2006 American League Championship

For Wyandotte Patch sports blogger , the best moment in Tigers’ history came in Game 4 of the 2006 American League playoffs against the Oakland Athletics. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Magglio Ordonez broke a 3-3 tie with a three-run home run that finished off a four-game sweep of Oakland. “My favorite moment is easily when Magglio hit the home run to launch the Tigers into the World Series,” Sayre said.

1987 Eastern Division Title

came at Tiger Stadium on Sunday Oct. 4, 1987, when the Tigers beat Toronto 1-0 to win the Eastern Division title. Entering that three-game series, the Blue Jays had a one-game lead over the Tigers, but Detroit won Friday and Saturday to instead go up one game and set up the Sunday showdown. As an 11-year-old boy, I was glued to the T.V. that weekend watching baseball. And on Sunday, I saw veteran lefty Frank Tanana pitch a complete-game shutout to clinch the division on the season’s final day.
