Roosevelt Basketball Comeback Falls Short 70-64

Roosevelt comeback bid fails despite Devan Stewart's big game.

Despite getting 24 points from sophomore guard Devan Stewart, fell to visiting Carlson 70-64.  The Bears have now lost four out of five games.

Roosevelt jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, satisfying the home crowd. The Bears went on a scoring drought, however, and there was very little flow on offense. Stewart was filling in at the point guard position due to senior Jettson Cavasos seeing limited action due to a virus. Roosevelt trailed 18-16 heading into the second quarter.

Stewart continued to play well in an effort to keep his team in the game. But the Bears went through a three-minute drought without scoring a basket, and this allowed the Marauders to open up the game. Roosevelt was trailing by 14 points heading into halftime.

The third quarter saw the teams exchange baskets back and forth, but as it seemed Roosevelt was going to go on a run, Carlson was there to stop it. The Bears again trailed by 14 heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter saw a key figure for the Bears having to exit the game. Senior Michael Holderbaum fouled out with over seven minutes left in the game, forcing the Bears to juggle their lineup a little. Stewart helped out on defense by taking a charge, leading to an offensive foul on Carlson. The nimble guard was on the ground for a couple of seconds before getting up. Stewart was clearly in pain and had to come out of the game. When he returned, he still showed flashes of great play, but he was not the same. The Bears made it close in the end, but Carlson was able to hold on for the six-point victory.

“Tonight, we had a better effort. Every shot that we had was one that we wanted. Even though we lost, I am very happy with our performance tonight,” Roosevelt coach Dave Cramton said.

Stewart was also pleased with his performance from his teammates. “I thought we played the hardest we have played all season tonight,” Stewart said.

Wyandotte will travel to Taylor Kennedy on Tuesday for a game at 7 p.m. with the Eagles.
