Tough Week for Wyandotte Baseball Ends with Loss to Southgate Anderson

Despite a seventh-inning comeback attempt, the Bears fell short Thursday and were defeated by Southgate Anderson 6-5.

A struggling baseball team lost at home Thursday to Southgate Anderson 6-5.

The defeat was the fourth straight for Wyandotte  (5-4, 1-3), and third consecutive league loss.

Things looked good early as a third-inning single from senior Chase Schmittou broke a scoreless tie and put the Bears up 2-0. His hit scored sophomore Devan Stewart and senior Travis Rodery.

Junior Devon Jones started on the mound for the Bears and held the Titans scoreless for the first four innings. The lefty had been very effective in his previous two outings, which included a complete game shutout on April 1.

However, things unraveled for Wyandotte in the fifth as Jones started struggling with his control. Before the inning was over, Southgate scored five runs and sent 11 men to the plate.

Giving up several runs at once, as the Bears did in the fifth, plagued the team in all three games played this week.

Coach Brian Cotner said the team will need to start focusing on smaller goals to avoid this and be successful again.

“We’re just going to keep working hard and try to eliminate the big inning,” Cotner said. “We’re going to take it pitch by pitch, out by out.”

Despite the fifth-inning damage, Wyandotte was still in position to win at the end.

Two RBI from Jones in the sixth sent the Bears into the seventh inning down only 6-4.

With two out in the seventh, Senior Steve Caldwell hit a single that drove in junior Hunter Matt and cut the deficit to one run.

Caldwell then represented the winning run, since Schmitou had reached base ahead of him. Unfortunately for the Bears, the rally was not enough and an infield fly out ended the game.

Rodery, who was 0-for-3 Thursday, said Wyandotte needs to improve offensively to break the team’s current losing streak.

“We need to get runners on base to start off the inning and then we’ve got to get those clutch hits to get the runs in,” Rodery said.
