Winter Sports Heat up Wyandotte-Trenton Rivalry

Sports teams from the two high schools competed against each other in an action-packed week.

The athletic rivalry between and was in full swing last week. The two Downriver League foes squared off in bowling, hockey, basketball, swimming and competitive cheer. 

Here's a roundup on how each school fared as the two powerhouses did battle:

Girls Bowling

In competition Wednesday at Taylor Lanes, the Trenton girls beat Wyandotte 17-13. Strong performances by Roosevelt's Lindsey Ragen and Mara Schippling led the team to a commanding early lead. However, the Trojans mounted a strong comeback and swept the final game to win overall. Wyandotte is in action again at 3 p.m. Thursday, taking on new opponents at Lodge Lanes in Belleville.

Also at Taylor Lanes on Wednesday, the Wyandotte boys knocked off Trenton 19-11. In the first game, the Bears posted a team score of 1,042, which is one of the best individual game performances by any Downriver League team so far this season. Leading Roosevelt was Austin Irwin and Tony Zaddach, while Trenton's Justin Gabriel bowled a perfect 300 game for the Trojans. Wyandotte is in action again at 3 p.m. Thursday, taking on new opponents at Lodge Lanes in Belleville.

Trenton (11-1) grabbed an early lead Wednesday (3-8) night on the road against Wyandotte, but needed overtime to beat the Bears 4-3. Down by three goals, Roosevelt tied the game with one goal in the first period and two in the third period. In overtime, Trenton's Cory Seychel scored the game winner for his team. Seychel led the Trojans with two goals, while Tyler Groat led the Bears with two goals. The Bears next play at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Orchard Lake St. Mary's.

Swimming and Diving

Wyandotte remained undefeated after traveling to Trenton on Thursday and defeating the Trojans by a score of 112-74. Strong performances for Roosevelt came from Collin Olson and Jesse Knowles. For Trenton, David O’Donnell, who was a state-finalist last season, performed well against the Bears. Wyandotte’s next meet is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Lincoln Park.

Girls Basketball

Roosevelt (5-4) knocked off Trenton (5-4) by a score of 39-34 Thursday night in Wyandotte. The Trojans kept it close for the entire contest, but the Bears were able to pull away just enough in the fourth quarter to take the victory. Roosevelt's Amelia Czarnota led the Bears with 16 points, while Trenton's Tori Vandenberg led the Trojans with eight points. Wyandotte’s next game is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against Southgate Anderson.

Boys Basketball

In Trenton on Friday night, the Trojans (5-3) crushed Wyandotte (3-4) by a score of 71-48. Wyandotte heads to Southgate Anderson for their next contest at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Competitive Cheer

Wyandotte and Trenton both took part in the Wyandotte Invitational on Saturday at Roosevelt. Wyandotte finished in second place with 746.4040 points and Trenton finished in fourth place, earning 631.78 points. Wyandotte next takes part in a local invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grosse Ile.
