Wyandotte Alum Will Play Hockey at Ferris State

Gerald Mayhew will play collegiate hockey following his career in the United States Hockey League.

Gerald Mayhew, the 2011 award winner and one of the standout players on the state championship team, has committed to play collegiate hockey at Ferris State University following his career in the United States Hockey League.

Mayhew, who is playing in his first season as a forward for the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) RoughRiders, leads the team with 12 goals and is second in scoring with 18 points in 27 games. 

Among the goals was a coveted hat trick in the 5-2 win over Green Bay on Oct. 22.

Mayhew, who turned 19 on New Year's Eve, was in town over the holidays at in honor of the state champ Bears hockey team.

Last season, Mayhew scored 44 goals for the Bears and totaled more than 100 points.

Mayhew said last season’s state title is something that can positively impact the current team as players learn from and build upon it.

“It’s a great experience for all of the young kids trying to repeat this year,” he said.
