Wyandotte Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Canton

The Bears knocked off the Chiefs 13-11 in game one, but suffered an 8-0 defeat in the nightcap.

snapped a four-game losing streak Thursday and defeated Canton 13-11 at Eastern Michigan University. The win came in the first game of a doubleheader against the Chiefs. The Bears (6-5, 1-3) dropped the second game 8-0.

In the first game, senior Chase Schmittou opened the scoring with a two-run, first-inning single. His hit brought in senior Travis Rodery and senior Gerald Mayhew.

Canton answered with two runs in the bottom of the first off of junior starting pitcher Devon Jones. Braden Price and Bernabie Salinas both scored for the Chiefs in the inning.

The Bears put up five runs in the fourth as Canton struggled with both pitching and defense.

“They made some errors out there, we capitalized on them,” Wyandotte coach Brian Cotner said. “That was basically the story of the game.”

During the next three innings, Canton fought back and eventually tied the game. A two-run triple from Canton’s cleanup hitter Garrett Bryden made it 7-7 in the sixth.

Bear bats exploded in the top of the seventh inning and the team scored six runs. Junior Hunter Matt singled twice in the inning, including a hit the second time that drove in two runs and put Wyandotte up 13-7.

Matt’s RBIs proved to be important as the Chiefs mounted another comeback.

Canton scored four runs in the seventh and sent Dryden to the plate as the potential tying run with two outs. Rodery, who was working in relief, was able to retire Dryden and give the Bears a victory.

Immediately following the Wyandotte victory, Canton coach Mark Blomshield said he was impressed with the Bears.

“Hats off to Wyandotte,” Blomshield said. “They did a nice job, they’re scrappy (and) they threw strikes. That’s the name of the game.”

In the second game, Canton’s pitching and defensive problems disappeared and the Bears were defeated 8-0.

Canton scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second and three in the fifth.

Wyandotte’s only threats came in the third and fourth innings. Each time, however, Chief fielders quickly ended the inning with a double play.

Sophomore Devan Stewart played in both games Thursday, including a relief pitching appearance.

“It was good to (get a win),” Stewart said. “We still have a lot more to work on to go forward.”
