Wyandotte Indians to Play in Peanut Bowl

The Wyandotte Indians freshman team will play Saturday at Dearborn High School against Washtenaw-Blue at 11 a.m.

With an 18-6 win last week against Melvindale, the Wyandotte Indians freshman team clinched a trip to the Peanut Bowl.

The squad of 8 and 9-year-old boys will take on Washtenaw-Blue at Dearborn High School on Saturday at 11 a.m. The school is located at 19501 Outer Drive.

The annual championship game pits the top two teams in their division of the Downriver Junior Football League.

Saturday’s winner will advance to play in the first-ever Super Peanut Bowl, taking on the winner of the other DJFL division, which will be either Washtenaw- Maize or River Rouge. The game will be hosted by Wyandotte.

Indians head coach Matt Hastings said that to get to the Peanut Bowl this year, his team bounced back from a tough 2011 season.

“Last year we were 1-7 (and a) last place team,” Hastings said. “We just put in some hard work; these kids are amazing.”

In 2012 the squad is 8-1, and has given up an average of only nine points per game along the way.

Hastings said his team plays tough on both sides of the ball, as the Indians have a strong defense, talented skill position players and an impressive offensive line.

Aside from the freshman team, Wyandotte Junior League football is also made up of a junior varsity (10 to 11 year olds) and a varsity squad (12 to 13 year olds).
