Wyandotte Reels in Kids Hook, Line and Sinker

A free Fishing Derby & Kids Expo will take place Saturday at Bishop Park.

You know summer has arrived when you see hundreds of children flocking to for the city’s annual .

The fishing event is from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Bishop Park fishing pier.

Fishers will be divided into two age groups: 5 to 8 and 9 to 13.

Prizes will be awarded to those who catch the longest fish, the smallest fish, the most number of fish and the most unusual item.

Only fish caught between 10 a.m. and noon will be counted and all children must catch without any assistance. Each child is limited to one pole and must use it, along with hooks, lines and a sinker. Live bait will be available at the pier.

Everyone will receive a T-shirt and gift bag.

The event is free, but limited to 200 children. Registration is required and can be done at the . The form can be downloaded by clicking on the flier above.

The Kids Expo immediately follows the Fishing Derby and runs till 4 p.m. at Bishop Park.

“Kid's Expo has been developed to help children and parents connect with the local activities, educational resources and entertainment,” the city said in a press release.

The four-hour free event has a number of activities planned, including inflatables for children to bounce on, a petting farm, camel rides and an interactive bird encounter.

Members of the also will be on hand to talk to the kids, along with representatives from several organizations, summer camps, sporting clubs and educational programs.

A demonstration stage also will be set up and will include dancing, choir singing and gymnastics.
