Wyandotte Track Sprints for Strong Finish at Regionals

Freshman Adaysha Parker has advanced to the state meet in the 400-meter dash.

The Bears traveled to Saline to compete in the regional track meet on Friday, and performed admirably despite injuries that robbed the team of most of its depth.

As a team, the boys garnered 19 points, placing 10th out of 16 teams, while the girls earned 18, taking 11th of 15 teams. 

was the only Bear to make the qualifying times needed to go to the MHSAA state meet, running a 58.7 in the 400-meter dash, placing fifth. She missed qualifying in the 200 dash by 0.2 seconds, running a 26.2 and placing sixth. She also missed in the 100 dash by 0.5 seconds, running a 13.0.

“I think I did well for a freshman," she said. "It was my first time here. I think I can do well this year, but I think I can take it all in a few years. I’m going to go hard at practice and come out and go as hard as I can (at the state meet).”

Other athletes came close to qualifying, but ended up falling just short. finished fourth in the 3200-meter, running an 11:38.8 and missing the qualifying time by five seconds. Sheila Deshazer finished in eighth and ran a 16.8 in the 100-meter hurdles, and the 800-meter relay of Amanda Chesney, Nicole Ostrowitz, Maricella Ruiz and Parker ran a 1:49.50, earning seventh. Stephanie Lee finished tied for sixth in the high jump, clearing 4’09.00”.

“We don’t have the numbers of everyone else," girls coach Krissy Powers said. "We only have 30 girls on the team; we only brought 18 to the meet. We don’t really look, yet, to place as a team. We look at individual events and personal records."

Injuries hampered the boys team, but the team persevered and had some young athletes come through for them to score points for them. 

finished fifth in the 800-meter, running a 2:01.5. The 400-meter relay team ran a 46.7 and came in eighth while the 1600 relay finished fifth and ran a 3:37.0 and the 3200 relay ran a 8:24.2 and finished a strong third.

“The young squad that we had today did very well," coach Justin Dwarzski said. "We had a couple of our better seniors not compete today due to injuries. In all, we were satisfied with our performance from the underclassman. It was a great learning experience for our freshman and sophomores."
