Mary, The work you do is incredible and I have seen it help many people, just during the times that I have run into you at the pound. Animals bring such joy to our community, and often people downplay the importance of organizations like yours without being fully aware of the impact that they have for many of our less vocal citizens. I think that anyone who is doing some good should be honored for the piece of the community they are trying to improve, and I am glad you were nominated for all your behind the scenes efforts, and for doing many tasks that some of us might turn our noses up against. When I think of all the times that I have witnessed elderly people finding joy when a pet was brought into the home or when a helper dog visited a hospice center, I can feel confident about the crucial role that animal organizations play in our community. I know you serve many people who are lonely and in need of companionship. Pets teach children compassion and responsibility. Thank you for all the heart you put into all that you do -- it's amazing that you juggle being a mom, working, and playing such an instrumental role in the pound. You're the best!!!!

I think it's wonderful that people are recognized for helping in a variety of ways, either animals, people or the environment. And, in my opinion, by helping animals you help people -whether that's helping an owner with finding a new home for their pet, or providing a low-income family with pet food from the local pantry. We're all connected.

Your snide remark makes me very upset... There should be more people out there like Mary who go to any extent to help an animal ..I applaud u Mary for Volunteering for something that u believe in... People who criticize are normally people who don't lift a finger to give back to the community or help in any sort of volunteering with out seeing some kind of reimbursement .... I think Abraham Lincoln said it best I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being.

Mary, has always gone well beyond the call of duty; be it with the animals she helps & the people she knows. I know this because she is a wonderful member of our family. Congratulations, Mary, you deserve the nomination & then some.

@ Gary have you ever heard the saying if you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all.. Everyone chooses to live their lives different and what you value as important another person might not.. So it would be much appreciated if you keep ur rude comments and remarks to you self!!
John Hetzler (Editor) February 13, 2012 at 09:33 PM
Please keep the comments civil and let's try to treat each other in a neighborly manner.

Mary is a great person, to people and to animals. I have never seen her once turn her back on a friend in need, and she would give you the last cent she had if you needed it.

Mary- I haven't known you for a long time but I have had the pleasure of working side by side at the PAWS in the Park as well at our group functions and you are such a hard working, devoted individual. I am proud that you received this honor and you are fully deserving! Verne
