John Dingell Calls Re-Election to Record-Breaking 30th Term

Dingell called his win in a release sent out Tuesday night.

With results still coming in, U.S. Rep. John Dingell has called the race for his re-election to the House of Representatives. He faces Republican Cynthia Kallgren, a businesswoman from Trenton, in the race for the newly drawn district, which includes parts of Wayne and Washtenaw counties. If officially re-elected, Dingell will enter his 30th term in Congress in January. That will make him the longest-serving congressman in U.S. history. “I want to thank the fine people of Michigan's 12th Congressional District for once again allowing me to serve them in the U.S. House; it is my distinct honor and privilege to do so," Dingell said in a statement released Tuesday night. "I will continue to fight hard for their priorities and to make them …

Trenton Republican Calls Win in 12th District Congressional Primary

Cynthia Kallgren will face longtime U.S. Rep. John Dingell in the Nov. 6 general election.

With late-night numbers too close to call on the Aug. 7 primaries, unofficial results from the Michigan Secretary of State Wednesday morning are giving the Republican bid for the 12th District U.S. House of Representatives seat to Trenton businesswoman Cynthia Kallgren. With 100 percent of precincts reporting from the Wayne and Washtenaw territories the new 12th District covers, Kallgren appears to have won by 358 votes over Karen Jacobsen of Dearborn. Kallgren's camp called the election around 9 a.m. Wednesday via their Twitter account, telling followers "The final results are in! Thanks to everyone who made this possible." The tweet links to results as reported by the Associated Press; however, the AP and other media outlets had not …

Dingell, a Democrat, will face off against University of Michigan–Ann Arbor student Daniel Marcin in the Aug. 7 Democratic primary in Michigan's 12th Congressional District. Republicans Karen Jacobsen and Cynthia Kallgren will face off in their own party's primary at the same time, with the top vote-getter from each party battling each other in the Nov. 6 general election. This week, Patch has brought you profiles on all four candidates. If you missed any of the coverage, you can catch up here: John Dingell Daniel Marcin Karen Jacobsen …

Nope. I agree 100%. John Dingell still maintains the same platform he maintained for those 59 terms. Only thing though is his district has changed many times over. I don't want a representative who stands on his time served in Congress, I want one who will do what's right for his district.   more ›

Dingell on Opponents: 'Ignorance,' 'Inexperience' Unfit for Politics

Candidates for the 12th District say it's time for John Dingell to retire. But the Dearborn Democrat said he still has work to do in the nation's capital.

If first-time candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 12th District are hoping that distancing themselves from politics will help boost their campaigns, Congressman John Dingell is banking on exactly the opposite. Out of four nominees for the seat that would encompass downriver, Dearborn and west to Ann Arbor, Dingell is the only who has held office. And it’s his experience that he believes will carry him into his 30th term. More: Meet the 12th Congressional District candidates “I never thought ignorance or inexperience was a qualification for running for office,” Dingell said in an interview with Dearborn Patch, speaking about candidates who tout their lack of political backgrounds. But other candidates say it's their …

Mr. Walls, 'minimal government intrusion' doesn't make sense. What do you want the government to do? The Republican mantra of less government is just propaganda by the corporations and by supporting this, you are actually getting less freedom and a government that supports the corporations. The corporations aren't stupid, they know that they need laws in their favor and you are supporting that at…   more ›

12th Congressional District: John Dingell

Longtime U.S. Rep. John Dingell will face off against first-time candidate Daniel Marcin in the Aug. 7 Democratic primary election.

This is the last of a four-part series introducing the candidates running for the 12th Congressional seat. Dearborn Democrat John Dingell is looking to break a record. And if the 29-term representative is elected this November to serve the newly drawn 12th District, he’ll do just that, becoming the longest serving member of Congress in American history. Heading into the Aug. 7 primary, Democrat Daniel Marcin and Republicans Cynthia Kallgren and Karen Jacobsen are also vying for the spot. One candidate from each political party will be eliminated at that time. Not surprisingly, candidates are taking shots at Dingell’s voting record on issues such as health care and social security. Marcin’s campaign website is even aptly titled No30thTerm.…

12th Congressional District: Daniel Marcin

University of Michigan student is hoping to unseat the Dean of the House of Representatives, John Dingell, in the Democratic primary for the 12th Congressional seat.

This is the third of a four part series introducing the candidates running for the 12th Congressional seat. Growing the economy. Stronger environmental protections. Legalizing gay marriage. Those three issues are what 25-year-old Daniel Marcin said separates him from U.S. Rep. John Dingell, who he is hoping to unseat in the Aug. 7 Democratic primary in the 12th Congressional district. While Marcin supports the three issues, he said, Dingell's record suggests otherwise. Dingell, who is seeking his 30th term in office at the age of 85, is the longest-serving member of the House of Representatives. If reelected, he would become the longest-serving member of Congress in June 2013, surpassing former West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd, who died in …

That's an interesting perspective, Sean. Do you think some people will choose to vote for whomever is running against Dingell in the general election? And more immediately, does Marcin stand a chance at defeating Dingell in the primaries tomorrow?   more ›

12th Congressional District: Karen Jacobsen

Karen Jacobsen will face off in the Republican primary against Cynthia Kallgren of Trenton for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

This is the second of a four part series introducing the candidates running for the 12th Congressional seat. Karen Jacobsen can remember a time several years back when, as she puts it, “I was not all that politically aware.” But, like many Americans, she was spurred to interest and eventually to action in 2009, when President Barack Obama’s health care reform bill passed into law. “I never thought in my wildest dreams that (Congress) would pass that bill,” said Jacobsen. “At that point, I had an epiphany: These people don’t work for us anymore.” Fast-forward to this year, and Jacobsen–a 22-year resident of Dearborn and the co-owner of die-cut company Jacobsen Industries with husband Lee–has thrown her hat in the ring for the Republican …
