Former 'Happy Days' Writer to Speak at Wyandotte Library

Mark Rothman also helped create 'Laverne & Shirley' and wrote for 'The Odd Couple.'

While Mark Rothman said he didn't write his own Wikipedia entry which calls him "a noted television writer, playwright, screenwriter, and occasional actor," he doesn't shy away from those credits. The Farmington Hills man helped create Laverne & Shirley and also worked as a writer on Happy Days and The Odd Couple.  "Perhaps my biggest claim to fame is being responsible, for about six months in 1975, while head writer for the Happy Days TV series, for Americans saying to each other, 'Sit on it,'" he wrote on his blog. And now, the former TV writer and current author will be bringing his stories to Wyandotte's Bacon Memorial District Library. Rothman will speak at the library at 6:30 p.m. April 16 about his life in TV, as well as about the …

Wyandotte Library Hosting Blind Date with a Book

The covered books have clever slogans written on them, such as "Love Me" and "Stud or Dud?"

If you can’t decide what book you want to read next, the staff at Wyandotte’s Bacon Memorial District Library has made it easier for you.  The library is hosting a new program, Blind Date with a Book, throughout February. Staffers have handpicked some of their most recommended titles and have wrapped the books in brown paper bags. The covered books have clever slogans written on them, such as "Love Me" and "Stud or Dud?" A variety of genres are included, including biographies, real crime, fiction and mystery. You won’t know what you’ve picked until you select one and unwrap it to see. “The whole intention of it is that people get stuck in a rut reading the same thing or the same author,” Reference Librarian Jaclyn Malnar said. “This is a …

Lucille Ball Memorabilia on Display at Wyandotte Library

The famed TV comedian was about 1 year old when her family moved to Wyandotte.

Fans from around the world have their own favorite memories of TV funny woman Lucille Ball. But those living in Wyandotte, like Sandra Havlicsek, have a special connection as Lucy and her family once lived in Wyandotte. "I just love her," Havlicsek said. "I feel like I'm related to her. She was such a comedian. Even when she was mean, she was so funny." Lucy was about 1 year old when her family moved to Wyandotte. It's believed they relocated here so her father, an electrician, could take a job with the Bell Co. as a telephone lineman. The phone company was in a hiring boom for that position and paid $5 a day. The Ball family lived at 126 Biddle. In 1928, however, the U.S. Postal Service changed the addresses on Biddle. The property …

Wyandotte Library Needs 5 Minutes of Your Time

Help form the library's 2013 strategic plan by taking a short 10-question online survey.

The staff at Bacon Memorial District Library is asking for five minutes of your time. And you don't even have to leave your house.  The library is asking all patrons to fill out a short, 10-question online survey. "Please help us plan for the future," the library's website says. "We value your input and greatly appreciate your time!" The questions are pretty general, such as how often do you visit the library and what do you do while there.  The final question is open ended, asking "What, if anything, would encourage you to use Bacon Memorial District Library more?" The answers will be used to help form the library's 2013 strategic plan. Take the survey here and then tell us your overall thoughts on the library in the comments section …

How Well Do You Know Your Library?

You might be surprised at some of the Bacon Memorial District Library statistics.

How many visitors do you think the Bacon Memorial District Library had in one year? Would you be able to guess the number of materials checked out in the same period of time? Patrons might be taken aback at the amount of hours the library is open per year or how many print matierals they offer for reading.  The library, which is open six days per week, offers many things besides books. Residents can utilize the library's website any time, any day. There they can manage their accounts, request matierals and pay bills. The Bacon Memorial District Library has other resources, such as online databases and seachable city directories from 1898 to 1940.  Besides books, patrons can check out DVDs or download ebooks and audiobooks to their personal…

You can even go online, see if the library has what you are looking for before you head out and then request exactly what you would like to read (provided it is owned by one of the other libraries in our large network) and get notified when it is available. Dropping in to browse is also great. My favorite thing is the new releases table. I've read quite a few books that I might not normally have …   more ›
