Pink Football included the Wyandotte Roosevelt football team playing in pink jerseys Friday night, as well as a silent auction for the jerseys after the game.
Members of the Wyandotte Roosevelt football team gave the shirts off their backs Friday night in an effort to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. Clad in commemorative pink jerseys, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Bears played on their home field against Southgate Anderson. Immediately after the game, the jerseys were sold in a silent auction with those in attendance bidding on the specific jersey they wanted. The event was known as Pink Football and was sponsored by Jeremy Sladovnik, the owner of Joe’s Hamburgers and founder of the nonprofit organization Stars Shining Through. Sladovnik said proceeds from the jersey sale will go to Yes Ma’am, Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital’s program that provides free mammograms…

Organizer Matt Peterson is still seeking cash and prize donations for Nov. 16 event.
When Matt Peterson began organizing a fundraiser for 8-year-old Chloe, a Wyandotte girl with terminal cancer, he didn’t imagine how much support he would receive. Peterson, whose daughter is a friend of Chloe, has received many donations and offers to help for the girl’s family over the last couple weeks. “I didn’t picture it getting as big as it has,” Peterson said. "Things are going great with all the help of some very wonderful people." Ramsey’s Coney Island is donating food, Mac’s Market is supplying beer, and the Wyandotte Veterans of Foreign Wars are donating the use of their hall for the fundraiser. The owner of Charlie’s Bar & Grill is providing a DJ for the event and the Wyandotte Business Association is helping with publicity. …

Wyandotte's Andrea Clary Vos is a fighter who has battled cancer for years. While her illness has now developed into stage four lung cancer, the 55-year-old said she's not going to let it get the best of her or change her path. She's determined to do a selfless act to help the same relatives who have been there for her over the years. Working under the credo of leaving behind “less of a mess (and) more of a legacy," the Wyandotte woman is hosting her own estate sale to find new homes for much of her worldly possessions. As a local antiques and collectibles dealer, she's accumulated a lot of items over the years. “I can't bear the thought of my family having to sort through all this ‘stuff,’” Vos said. “Besides, some of my “treasures” need …

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story was originally posted on Wyandotte Patch on Feb. 9. Today it was chosen for Huffington Post's Greatest Person of the Day feature. Andrea Clary Vos may be battling stage four lung cancer, but she said she’s more determined than ever to make sure she leaves behind “less of a mess (and) more of a legacy.” As a local antiques and collectibles dealer, Vos has accumulated a lot of items over the years. With the help of friends and family, she is hosting her own estate sale next month. The 55-year-old Wyandotte woman said she felt a little awkward about running her own sale, but knows she’s doing it for all the right reasons. “I can't bear the thought of my family having to sort through all this ‘stuff,’” she said. “…

Wyandotte Roosevelt High students rally to make cards for Joey Caretti, a young boy in his second battle with cancer, and deliver their messages of encouragement in time for Christmas.
The students at Roosevelt High School have plenty of heart. They proved it recently by organizing an outpouring of support for an 11-year-old boy recently diagnosed with leukemia. It all started in early December. Ron Adams, who teaches global events, asked his class to focus on some stories of virtue. He passed out some newspapers and told them to pick an article to discuss in class. Lauren Hall, a senior, was inspired by a story about Joey Caretti of Washington Township. Joey had won the battle with a rare form of brain cancer on Nov. 11. But just weeks later, he was diagnosed with a second cancer–leukemia. Now facing yet another battle with additional cancer treatments and the prospect of a bone marrow transplant, Joey was humble enough…

An amazing finish to Paint the Town Pink. Could have been warmer, and Michigan/MS could have picked a different day to play, and we could sold a lot more glasses. But it was SO gratifying --- the launch was fun and beautiful and rewarding. For all that attended, for the Jaycees, Council, DPS, Municipal Service, the 6 Pioneer Wine Trail wineries that were here, Sweet Nothings, Nana's, Mayor …   more ›
