Christmas is the season of giving, and Patch wants to know what charity or group you are giving to this year. The American Red Cross released a poll in November in which most Americans said that they will continue to donate to charity this holiday season. In fact, most people said that their giving to political causes and Hurricane Sandy relief efforts will not reduce their year-end gifts to charity. The Red Cross poll also said that friends play a large role in charitable giving. Half of all donors (51 percent) said they would donate if a friend talked to them personally about a charity. Ten Detroit-area charities are competing for $40,000 this week in The Great Charity Giveaway sponsored by The Suburban Collection. Established last year by the Troy-based automotive retail group, the winners of this year’s annual competition will be determined by visitors to The Suburban Collection’s website, www.SuburbanCollection.com, or their Facebook page. Ten dollar donations are being doubled to provide winter warmth to about 70 Wyandotte students.
Members of the Rotary Club of Wyandotte have partnered with the online coupon giant, Groupon, to help provide winter coats to children in need this year. For every $10 donation, the Rotary Club will match it with another $10 to provide the $20 it costs to purchase a warm coat for a needy child. The promotion runs through Thursday and is in conjunction with Rotary Clubs from Gibraltar, Grosse Ile, Taylor, Trenton and Woodhaven/Brownstown Township. Donations of up to $7,000 will be matched by the six clubs. In 2008, more than 145,000 children in Wayne County lived in poverty, which accounts for nearly 30 percent of all children in the county, according to Rotary officials. My favorite for the last 35 years has been the Old Newsboys Goodfellow Fund of Detroit, a 98-year old 501(C)(3) charity that this year hopes to raise $1.2 million to provide 32,000 Christmas packages stuffed with warm clothing, hats, gloves, toys, dolls, books, candy and a host of other gifts for kids aged 5-13 in Detroit, Harper Woods, Highland Park and River Rouge.
