Put Those Trees out for Free Pickup in Wyandotte

Waste Management will pick up Christmas trees and turn them into compost throughout January.

Residents with real Christmas trees will be able to easily dispose of them next month while being environmentally friendly at the same time. Waste Management, the city's contracted trash hauler, will pick up trees that are placed at the curb for free. Collections will take place on Tuesdays for those living north of Vinewood and on Thursdays for those living south of Vinewood. Ornaments, decorations, tree stands and plastic bags must be removed. The trees will be composted after being collected. The program runs from Jan. 2 through Jan. 31.

WATCH: 2012 Wyandotte Christmas Tree Lighting

Choirs from Roosevelt High School and First United Methodist Church provided entertainment.

While the temperatures weren't winterlike, crowds of people huddled near Sycamore and Biddle on Friday night for the annual Wyandotte tree lighting ceremony. A sing-a-long featuring the choirs of Roosevelt High School and First United Methodist Church provided the entertainment before city officials turned the switch on to light the city's large tree. Local photographer Anthony DeCuir captured part of the event on video. For photos from the tree lighting, check out our gallery, where you can upload your owns shots, as well.
