The Detroit Fire Department sent in its fire boat to pull water from the river to fight blaze at Wyandotte's Lions & Tigers & Beers Sports Club.
When Wyandotte's water supply started to get low Sunday night, emergency crews didn't have to look far for the assistance needed to help fight the devastating fire at Lions & Tigers & Beers Sports Club. All they had to do was look to the rear of the building at the Detroit River. "People talk about the water in the Detroit River, but it worked to our advantage this time," Wyandotte Mayor Joseph Peterson said. "It’s going to help save blocks of our city. Having the water was a plus." Using large 5-inch lines, Brownstown firefighters pumped water in from the Detroit River to battle the blaze from the rear of the building. The Detroit Fire Department also sent in its fire boat to pump water from the river onto the blaze. Senior Chief Mike …

A fire broke out at about 7 p.m. Sunday at Lions & Tigers & Beers Sports Club in downtown Wyandotte.
A fire at Lions & Tigers & Beers Sports Club quickly went from a smoky inferno to an all-out blaze Sunday night. Wyandotte Fire Chief Jeff Carley said the building is a complete loss. The fire raged for hours until only a couple of hot spots were left at about 1 a.m. While some neighboring departments that came in to help were preparing to call it a night, Carley said, some crews would remain till daybreak. No injuries were reported. Emergency responders even rescued a cat that had been stuck for hours inside a loft in an adjacent building. Emergency crews evacuated residents in nearby buildings. Shane Pett lives in a loft in a nearby building and was allowed back into his place to grab some personal items. "It does smell like smoke really…

Jim Sneed ran into the house in the 400 block of Cedar after realizing a man was still inside.
As fate would have it, Jim Sneed took a side street on the afternoon of March 28 as he drove to his next appointment. The service technician from Wyandotte Municipal Services was en route to a house on Goddard as he drove down Fourth Street at about 2:15 p.m. As he passed Cedar, he happened to look down the street and noticed a house on fire. He high-tailed it the house in the 400 block and realized he was the first person on the scene. “I went up to the door and the door was open,” he said. “I heard a man in there coughing, so I went in and got him.” That proved to be more difficult that Sneed imagined. “It didn’t look bad from the outside looking in, but once you got in, it was bad,” he said Thursday while surrounded by fellow city …

An electrical pole also was torched, but the overhead wires were not damaged.
A Dumpster fire late Saturday damaged the siding of the rear of Midwest Camera Repair. The Fire Department received a call at about 11:20 p.m. “When we got there, the Dumpster was going pretty good and actually caught some of the siding at the rear of the building on fire,” Fire Capt. Mike Brandt said. “When we got there, the flames were probably 8, 10 feet high." The fire was contained to the Dumpster, but the flames also torched a nearby electrical pole. Electric wires were directly over the Dumpster, but power was never lost. A crew from Wyandotte Municipal Services came out to inspect the wires and said everything was fine, Brandt said. While the fire didn’t reach inside the building, there was a slight smoke smell that could be …

A house in the 400 block of Cedar caught fire at about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday.
A man who works the midnight shift woke up at about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday to find the back porch of his house in the 400 block of Cedar on fire. It took firefighters about an hour to get the fire under control. By that time, though, the second floor of the home and the attic area had suffered significant damage. “Wind speeds didn’t help us any,” Wyandotte Fire Chief Jeffery Carley said. “(The fire) spread pretty quickly because of the wind.” At the time, he said, the wind speed was about 24 mph, gusting as high as 33 mph. The man was the only member of his family home at the time. Firefighters were able to rescue the family’s pets, with the exception of one bird, who died. Carley said firewood, hay and an electrical cord were found on the …

A marina is burning in Ontario.
Correction: A previous version of the story misidentified the location of the fire. It is downriver from the St. Clair River in St. Clair County. Fire officials are urging St. Clair County residents, especially those with breathing difficulties, to stay inside due to a fire in Ontario that's sending thick, black smoke across the St. Clair River. A marina that houses as many as 75 boats and several antique and collectible cars caught fire this morning near Sarnia, Ontario. "Apparently, the fiberglass that's burning is causing some toxic fumes," Lambton OPP Const. Chrystal Jones told the CBC. "We're asking people to stay clear of the area and to keep an eye on the smoke, to stay indoors and to stay out of the path of that because it could …
