A recently enacted Michigan law changed the minimum age requirement for a child enrolling in kindergarten.
Plan on sending your child to kindergarten in Wyandotte for the 2013-14 school year? Here are some things you should know. A recently enacted state law changed the minimum age requirement for children enrolling in kindergarten. The changes are set to take place over three years beginning at the start of the 2013-14 school year. Currently, a child must be five years old before Dec. 1 to be eligible for kindergarten, but that has changed, according to the Michigan Pupil Accounting and Attendance Association (MPAAA): Parents with children who are ineligible for enrollment according to the new standards, but will be five years old by Dec. 1, can apply for a waiver to secure enrollment, according to the MPAAA. Here's how: After a district …

Wyandotte Public Schools is hosting a meeting for parents of children who will be 5 by Nov. 1.
Parents of soon-to-be-kindergartners: It’s time to think about that first day of school in September. Wyandotte Public Schools is hosting a meet-and-greet next month for parents of incoming kindergartners. Kindergarten roundup will take place at 1:30 and 5:30 p.m. March 26 at the district's four elementary schools: Garfield, 340 Superior; Jefferson, 1515 15th; Monroe, 1501 Grove and Washington, 1440 Superior. While there are two sessions scheduled at each building, parents only need to attend one of them. Wyandotte Public Schools is hosting several meetings for parents of children who will be 5 by Dec. 1.
Parents of soon-to-be-kindergartners: It’s time to think about that first day of school in September. Wyandotte Public Schools is hosting a series of meet-and-greets for parents of children who will be 5 by Dec. 1. Parents will have a chance to tour the school and meet the kindergarten teacher, as well as other staff members. Registration packets also can be picked up or turned in, if already gotten from the school. School Superintendent Carla Harting said attendance at kindergarten roundup is important for both the parents and the district. “This helps us to know how many incoming kindergartners to expect, how many teachers we’ll need and all of the materials we’ll need for them,” she said. “It really helps us prepare for the fall.” …

The Wyandotte Board of Education vote Tuesday night means four to five laid-off teachers will be called back to accommodate the switch from half-day to full-day kindergarten classes in the district.
Beginning next school year, kindergarten students in Wyandotte Public Schools will begin attending full-day sessions. On Tuesday night, the Board of Education voted unanimously to shift the current half-day curriculum to full day beginning next fall. Earlier this year, the Michigan Legislature voted to no longer give a full-time equivalent status to half-day kindergarten programs, as the state had in the past. Schools remaining at half day status would stand to lose more than $3,500 per pupil in state funding, effective at the start of the 2012-13 school year. Aside from avoiding the funding cut, Wyandotte Superintendent Carla Harting said having kindergarten students spend all day in session would benefit them. “Research has shown that a …

I like the idea of a test along with parent discretion for enrolling your kindergartener. My oldest has a December birthday. There wasn't a choice back then. By the time she entered kindergarten, she was reading chapter books. All along she has earned A's. Now in high school, she is 4.0 in advanced classes. Most of her friends are in the grade above her. Had we had the option back then, we would …   more ›
