Wyandotte Band Director Thanks Kid Rock

Performing during Detroit Lions' halftime show offered students an 'indescribable' opportunity.

Thank you to Wyandotte Patch for covering our recent story of the Wyandotte Marching Chiefs performance with Kid Rock in the United Way/ Detroit Lions Thanksgiving Day Halftime Show. Because of your recent article, Kid Rock took notice and has paid off all of our band's expenses related to this performance.  Overall, the experience of performing in front of 70,000 people and on national TV is not something I will ever be able to provide for my students in the classroom or in a regular marching band season. It is a pretty awesome feeling to be a part of something that big and it is pretty indescribable for me to see the students rise to the occasion and perform at their very best. In a recent article we reported that we were going to invite…

Just a quick note to say thank you to Kid Rock for making our dreams come true for each of our kids! I would also say how luck we are to have a man like Mr D to lead our kids on a daily bases! Not just in band but in life to! You make a difference in their life! You and your staff our the greatest group of people and we are lucky to have you! Ty and God bless you all!   more ›

A Letter to the Editor: True Catholics Abide by Church's Longstanding Beliefs, Practices

'Independent' Catholics are not living up to the teachings of the Second Vatican Council.

To the Editor: In response to Fr. Jerry Brohl's blog post, “Changes in Downriver Catholic Churches,” I wish to address several issues. When I saw the headline of this blog on my Facebook page, I was disturbed because I was deceived. I assumed this was merely a post about the fate of the merger/closings of certain parishes in the city of Wyandotte. However, it turns out that it is a blog about a dissenting community of believers who choose to label themselves as “independent” Catholics. The wording of the headline and the introduction of the blog struck me as a direct spiritual attack on vulnerable faithful Catholics whose parish may be closing (e.g. St. Elizabeth of Hungary) or merging (St. Stanislaus Kostka and St. Patrick) and that …

Mark, It's our ministry to be the church we believe Jesus had in mind when he grew His community. We retain as much of the dogma and practice of the church as our informed conscience will allow. You dismiss us by saying we are liars and heretics. Liars no, heretics possibly. Because our interpretation of Vatican II documents differs from yours, you assume you are right and all other …   more ›

A Letter to the Editor: Damon Is Home Safe

Wyandotte mother thanks the community for their help in locating teen who ran away.

Damon is home and safe. He was brought home at 2:30 a.m. by the police yesterday morning. He is also back in school.  I want to thank everyone for being so supportive and helpful during this past week.  Every bit of help counts and wouldn't have gotten him home this soon without it.  Thank you all again. Lisa Bissonnette-Braden, Wyandotte

A Letter to the Editor: Women Must Get Out and Vote

American Association of University Women is spearheading 'It’s My Vote: I Will Be Heard' campaign.

As Co-Communication Directors for the state of Michigan AAUW (American Association of University Women), we believe it is vital for everyone to vote. AAUW is quite proud to launch their seriousness in getting out the women’s vote for the 2012 November election. It is through the “It’s My Vote: I Will Be Heard” campaign. We will work to educate women across our country about the rights and privileges they need to protect. We propose to support the power, direction and notability of women’s voices and to commit ourselves to getting women to the polls in unprecedented numbers. AAUW is trying to mobilize women with a definitive focus on young women. In 30 states, legislators are trying to turn back to the 19th century at which time (only) …

Sue, Not sure how I came across there but it was apparently not the way I intended. I'm not saying anything about keeping people from making their voices heard, supporting/fighting for those issues they hold dear, or that women and minorities should not be allowed to vote. I am saying I do believe that people should have proper documentation proving US citizenship at the voting booth. Simple …   more ›

A Letter to the Editor: Cancer Sale a Success

Wyandotte woman's two-day fundraiser collected more than $1,000 for the American Cancer Society.

It is difficult to express my immense gratitude for the outpouring of support I received last weekend for my estate sale and cancer fundraiser. The people who turned out were awesome (and plentiful!), and their purchases and donations went far above any and all expectations and hopes, enabling us to forward well over $1,000 to the American Cancer Society, and to make a serious dent in my "bucket list." None of it would have been possible without a number of very key people and businesses who offered their unsolicited support simply because they are—well—wonderful! I won't attempt to name all the family and friends who gave so selflessly (including my sister who flew in from Texas and my friend, Chris, who made a surprise visit from Florida…

I was there and it was packed. I'm glad the Cancer Society made money. I hope Andrea (a very delightful lady) made money - a bunch of money - as well.   more ›
