Wyandotte Senior Citizen Housing Project Falls Through at Site of Closed Elementary School

School officials plan to put the former McKinley Elementary School back on the market.

Wyandotte school officials are back to square one in figuring out what to do with the site of the former McKinley Elementary School now that a planned development has fallen through. Royal Oak-based GWI Properties Inc. had proposed purchasing the land at 640 Plum and converting the building into a senior citizen housing project. That plan, however, was contingent on the company securing a grant to help fund the work. Company officials recently notified the school district that the grant fell through and therefore, their purchase offer was being rescinded. Ohh it would be a perfect place to do something like the farmers market.. But what I have thought since it was closed that it would make a awesome building to make it a city wide preschool instead of having them in all the local elementary school and high school.. It seems to me like they are "cramming" to much into the schools where they could use more class rooms and having all the preschoolers…   more ›

Wyandotte Board OKs Sale of McKinley Elementary

At Tuesday's Wyandotte Board of Education meeting, members voted unanimously to sell the McKinley Elementary School property for $225,000. A company based in Royal Oak plans to create senior citizen housing on the site.

On Tuesday night, the Wyandotte Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the sale of the former McKinley Elementary School property. The board agreed to accept an offer of $225,000 from GWI Properties, Inc., which is based in Royal Oak. The McKinley property, which is located at 640 Plum St., is a total of 2.7 acres and has not been used since 2009. Built more than 70 years ago, the school was closed at the end of the 2009 school year as a cost-cutting measure by the district. Wyandotte Superintendent Carla Harting said Tuesday night that GWI plans to create senior citizen housing on the site and wants to use the historic school building rather than demolish it. “They don’t want to tear down the building, which we like,” Harting …

I was a substitute teacher in this building years ago. The interior tile work was uniquely beautiful. I believe it may have been Pewobic Tile. I do hope that it is retained and appreciated in the senior housing.   more ›
