After volunteers spent countless hours turning Wyandotte pink throughout October for National Breast Cancer Month, the green has started to roll in and be put to good use. Nearly $4,500 has been donated thus far to the Yes Ma’am Program at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, which provides free mammograms to women without insurance and other means of being screened, according to hospital spokeswoman Stephanie Scheer. The money has come from a variety of events held in October, including a 3K run/walk, a comedy night fundraiser and T-shirt sales by the Wyandotte Fire Department. Pink Football included the Wyandotte Roosevelt football team playing in pink jerseys Friday night, as well as a silent auction for the jerseys after the game.
Members of the Wyandotte Roosevelt football team gave the shirts off their backs Friday night in an effort to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. Clad in commemorative pink jerseys, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Bears played on their home field against Southgate Anderson. Immediately after the game, the jerseys were sold in a silent auction with those in attendance bidding on the specific jersey they wanted. The event was known as Pink Football and was sponsored by Jeremy Sladovnik, the owner of Joe’s Hamburgers and founder of the nonprofit organization Stars Shining Through. Wyandotte firefighters will be looking a bit more casual this month, but hope that the message they’re wearing will be noticed more than anything else. Starting today, Wyandotte firefighters will be replacing their normal uniform with a blue and pink T-shirt in honor of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The shirts have a traditional pink ribbon on the front and a firefighter-themed ribbon on the back. What started out as an idea amongst friends has turned into a monthlong campaign involving more than a dozen Wyandotte businesses and organizations. And those responsible couldn’t be more proud. “Paint the Town Pink” is a collaborative effort of many downtown business owners who have banded together under the name “Tatas Task Force” to host several events to promote breast cancer awareness.
