2012 Wyandotte Football Team Reaches Semifinals and Makes School History

Wyandotte Roosevelt won 11 games in 2012 en route to a Downriver League title and an appearance in the MHSAA Division 2 state semifinals.

Before the 2012 season was over, Wyandotte Roosevelt had claimed a share of its third consecutive Downriver League title, a district championship, a regional crown and the most wins in school history. The Bears (11-2) had gained the support of the entire community as they were one only four teams left standing in MHSAA Division 2 last week before losing in the semifinal game 31-3 to defending state champion Birmingham Brother Rice. Roosevelt head coach Ron Adams said that at every step of the way this season there were people who doubted the Bears, as the team had graduated several talented players the year before. Instead of believing any of the naysayers, Adams said his team remained focused on its goals and ultimately proved them wrong…

Wyandotte Football Beats Oak Park 10-6 for Regional Title, Advances to Play Brother Rice in State Playoff Semifinals

A tough defensive effort and a late touchdown catch by Brandon Sowards led Wyandotte Roosevelt to a 10-6 win Friday night at home against Oak Park.

As a seventh grader, Brandon Sowards sat in the bleachers and watched his older brothers Todd and AJ both play for Wyandotte Roosevelt. On Nov. 15, 2008, he saw the pair walk off the field dejected after a 24-21 loss at Southfield in the regional final game that season.  When it was his turn this year, the junior receiver helped launch the 2012 Bears (11-1) one step further, catching a late fourth-quarter touchdown pass Friday night in a 10-6 victory at home against Oak Park. “I watched them both lose in the regionals to Southfield, so I was determined not to lose,” Sowards said. Roosevelt’s victory against the Knights (9-3) gives the team its first regional title under head coach Ron Adams, who took over in 2004. It also sends the Bears …

Wyandotte Roosevelt and Oak Park will square off at 7 p.m. tonight in Wyandotte.

Roosevelt shared the Downriver League title with Woodhaven and Taylor Truman, while Oak Park was the 2012 Oakland Activities Association White Division champion. Although the Knights have one more loss than Wyandotte, both defeats came at the hands of tough teams. Oak Park …

Wyandotte Alumni Help Inspire Football Team Before Big Game

Seven former Wyandotte Roosevelt Bears spoke with the current team Thursday night on the eve of their third-round playoff battle with Oak Park.

On the eve of the biggest game of the year so far, the Wyandotte Roosevelt football team got some extra inspiration from a group of seven former players. Wyandotte head coach Ron Adams invited Roosevelt graduates ranging from the classes of 1956 to 1997 to come and speak to his team. The alumni took turns addressing the current Bears, who take on Oak Park Friday in the third round of the state playoffs in a battle for the regional title. Scott Galeski, who is a 1982 graduate of Roosevelt, is currently a detective with the Wyandotte Police Department. He told the teens of a time where he was ambushed and shot early in his law enforcement career. He said the resiliency he learned from playing on the gridiron helped him keep fighting that day…

Wyandotte Football Wins District Title, Advances in State Playoffs

Wyandotte Roosevelt beat Taylor Truman 9-0 Friday night to claim its second consecutive district title. The win sets up a game between the Bears and Oak Park for the regional title next week.

Wyandotte Roosevelt captured its second consecutive district title Friday night, winning 9-0 at Taylor Truman in the second round of the state playoffs. The Bears (10-1) will host Oak Park next week in the regional final, while the Truman (8-2) season comes to an end. Roosevelt’s defense completely shut down the Cougars, who had come into the game hoping to avenge a Week 5 loss to Roosevelt. The Bears kept Truman off the scoreboard and allowed only 119 yards of total offense. Before Friday night, the Cougars had been averaging 40 points per game and more than 400 yards of total offense per game. Although the Roosevelt offense struggled at times, the team got all the points it would need from kicker Jacob Simpson. The junior made three …

Wyandotte Roosevelt and Taylor Truman will play a second-round playoff game at 7 p.m. tonight at Truman. The winner earns the district title and advances to play either Southfield or Oak Park next week.

Wyandotte Roosevelt will be looking to defend its district championship tonight as the team heads to Taylor Truman for a second-round playoff battle. The winner of tonight's contest moves on to play either Southfield or Oak Park next week for the regional title. The Bears (9-1) advanced last week with a victory at Woodhaven, getting revenge for a 64-36 loss in Week 6 to the Warriors (8-2). Tonight the roles are reversed a bit, as it will be the opposing Cougars (9-1) looking to avenge a loss to Roosevelt. In Week 5 Wyandotte traveled to Truman for a battle of then unbeaten teams. Autistic Boy Gets Wish, Meets Wyandotte Football Team

Nine-year-old Aaron Oberg was the special guest of the Wyandotte Roosevelt football team before the Bears took on Southgate Anderson this season.

When the Wyandotte Roosevelt football team takes the field on Friday nights, the bleachers are packed with students, parents and alumni, all cheering on the players. However, the Bears recently found out that their biggest fan of all is 9-year-old Aaron Oberg, a Wyandotte boy with Autism. On Oct. 19, the Washington Elementary School fourth-grader got a chance to meet his heroes. Aaron, along with his parents Arthur and Kimberly, were invited onto the field 40 minutes before that night’s game, which was against archrival Southgate Anderson. Every player immediately greeted Aaron, shook his hand and welcomed him onto their home turf. The teens talked with the boy, gave him a chance to check out their football gear and posed for pictures with…

Hello, this is Aaron's father, Arthur. I would like to add to the article how blessed we feel being a part of this school system overall. We have been in Wyandotte for 5 years now. I am the pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Wyandotte. For the first 4 years we were here, we lived in a church owned house. Wyandotte Football Wins Woodhaven Rematch 31-14, Advances to Second Round of Playoffs

Wyandotte Roosevelt's 31-14 win against Woodhaven advances the team to a second-round playoff game against Taylor Truman.

Wyandotte Roosevelt head coach Ron Adams didn’t have to say a word to his team Friday night to show them just how proud he was of their effort in a 31-14 playoff win at Woodhaven. Before starting his post-game address to the squad, Adams simply looked at the Bears (9-1) with a knowing smile. It was an expression the joyous group quickly recognized as they erupted into cheers. Roosevelt had plenty to be happy about, as the victory advances the team to the second round of the state playoffs, and avenges a 64-36 loss on Sept. 28 to the Warriors (8-2). Adams said his squad was better prepared this time, especially on defense, to put up a stronger fight against Woodhaven. “To give up 64 (points) and then to come back and hold your opponent that…
