Athletes from across the country will descend on Trenton to compete in front of college coaches and scouts at the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League Prep Hockey Showcase from Feb. 6-9.
More than 80 scouts packed into the Kennedy Recreation Center last year for the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League (MIHL) Prep Hockey Showcase, and showcase officials are expecting as many or more this year. More than 43 top-ranked high school teams, with hockey players from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Ontario, are set to play several games over the four-day event, according to an MIHL release. "There's going to be a lot of great hockey and a lot of scouts come from all over the place," said Tim Beaker, Kennedy's operations manager. Roosevelt High School's Wyandotte Bears will be competing again this year, along with other local teams from Trenton and Dearborn. The 13th annual showcase is set for Feb. 6-9. Games begin at…

Patch staffers will be greeting hockey fans Saturday night at Trenton's Kennedy Recreation Center.
If you're coming out to Saturday night's hockey game between Wyandotte and Trenton, be sure to stop by the Patch table inside Kennedy Recreation Center. Trenton-Grosse Ile Patch editor Nate Stemen and associate regional editor John Hetzler will be on site to give away some Patch swag. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m., but Patch will be there at 5:30 p.m. So come early, chat with the guys and walk away a winner. When you stop by the Patch table, be sure to mention that you're there to support the Bears. Just because the game is in their city doesn't mean they get all of the attention.

The Topeka (Kansas) RoadRunners drafted Groat in the first round on Thursday.
Tyler Groat, a standout player on the 2011 state championship Wyandotte Bears hockey team, will be skating in a few months for one of the top junior hockey leagues in the country. The Topeka (Kansas) RoadRunners drafted Groat in the first round on Thursday. The 6 feet 2 inch, 160-pound forward will be playing in the South Division of the North American Hockey League. Scott Langer, head coach and general manager of the RoadRunners, described Groat as a leader with good speed and a great shot. He also possesses a good “hockey IQ”, a trait that coaches find desirable, Langer said. Groat will graduate later this month from Roosevelt, where he was honored recently for being in the Top 10 percent of the 2012 graduating class. He earned a 3.91 …

Wyandotte Roosevelt's Tyler Groat is in the running for the High School Hockey Player of the Year.
Tyler Groat helped the Wyandotte Roosevelt Bears hockey team win its first ever state title last year. Even though this year's team isn't doing as well, Groat is still a force on the ice, having netted a dozen goals as the team's top scorer this season. And now the high school senior is being recognized for his play. As of midnight Tuesday, Groat ranked second in a statewide vote being conducted by State Champs! High School Sports Show. The TV show, in conjunction with The Suburban Collection, is instituting a High School Hockey Player of the Year. The first award will be given out later this year. Anyone can nominate a player by emailing idea@statechamps.tv. The top 10 candidates at any given time are listed on the show's website. Fans …

Wyandotte Roosevelt stormed back from a three-goal deficit Wednesday night at home, but lost 4-3.
Wyandotte Roosevelt battled back from a three-goal deficit at home Wednesday night against Trenton, but was dropped 4-3 in overtime. The first goal of the night for the Trojans (10-1-0-1) came from senior defenseman Cory Dunn, who put the Bears (3-8) down 1-0 at the 8:24 mark of the first period. About three minutes later, a goal from senior forward Michael Lesko put Trenton up 2-0. Lesko’s goal prompted Roosevelt head coach Mike Quint to switch goaltenders, benching junior Dalan Bulchak in favor of sophomore Frank Cerulla. Trenton senior forward Corey Seychel scored less than one minute after the switch, giving the Trojans a commanding 3-0 lead. Momentum shifted to the Bears, however, as Cerulla then shut down the Trojans and the …

Players from the 2010-11 Wyandotte Roosevelt hockey team were recognized Friday night for the squad's state championship season.
The 2010-11 Wyandotte Roosevelt hockey team was honored Friday night at Yack Arena for its unforgettable state championship season. Before a 7:40 p.m. contest against Grosse Ile, the entire squad from last season was introduced, including members of the current team, all of last year’s seniors and the coaching staff. Immediately following the introductions, banners recognizing last season’s Division 2 state title and regional championship were unveiled at the north end of the rink. Fans cheered wildly as the banners were displayed, banners which will now sit as constant reminders of what the team accomplished. Gerald Mayhew, a 2011 Roosevelt graduate, was one of the former players recognized. Last season, Mayhew scored 44 goals for the …

Unable to overcome three-first period goals by Trenton, Wyandotte Roosevelt was knocked off 5-1 Wednesday night on the road.
Trenton High School grabbed an early lead Wednesday night against Wyandotte Roosevelt and never let up, as the Bears were knocked off 5-1 on the road. The matchup was the first meeting of the season for the two teams, both of which are new members of the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League. The last time Trenton (5-2) and Roosevelt (1-4) squared off was on Feb. 28, which was during last season’s district playoffs. That night the Bears skated to a 3-2 win, bouncing the Trojans from the postseason. Unfortunately for Wyandotte, three first-period goals by Trenton led to a much different outcome Wednesday night. Getting things started for the Trojans was defenseman Cory Dunn, who put his team up 1-0 at 11:39 of the first period with a shot …

Novi Catholic Central scored three goals in two minutes and 19 seconds and that was the difference in the Shamrocks’ 4-1 win over Wyandotte Roosevelt on Wednesday night at Yack Arena. With the game tied at 1-1 after the first period, Catholic Central’s Lucas Linville beat Roosevelt goalie Dalan Bulchak 6:46 into the second period. Twenty-six seconds later, Tyler VanAcker made it 3-1. And 1:53 after that, Tyler VanNorman gave the Shamrocks a three-goal lead. Roosevelt has been well received by other teams in the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League.
Wyandotte Roosevelt hockey players are skating against some unfamiliar territory this season, but everyone involved said it'll lead to an exciting season. In late March, Roosevelt, along with Trenton, left the Michigan Metro Hockey League and joined the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League, arguably the state’s toughest prep league. Michigan Hockey recently spoke with some other MIHL coaches to gauge their reactions to Wyandotte and Trenton joining their ranks. This is what some of them had to say: “Our entire league is thrilled with the additions of Wyandotte and Trenton. They not only have solid programs but their coaches have similar views to the other MIHL coaches from a discipline and competitive standpoint.” Catholic Central Coach…
