Wyandotte Businessman Helps Create Grosse Ile Winery

Island Winery was started in January by five friends who, simply, wanted to do something -- together.

Suzanne Tola had no idea her love for wine would be the driving force behind a new Grosse Ile based winery that makes, bottles and sells wine on the island. The idea for Island Winery came to Grosse Ile residents Nick Bader and Southgate resident Kurt Tola after the two stopped at a winery during a hunting trip in northern Michigan, to pick up a few bottles of wine for Kurt's wife,  Suzanne. The winery, Valley Mist Winery, became a frequent stop for the childhood friends and, after learning a great deal about wine making from the winery's owner, the two decided to begin making wine of their own. Nick, president of Wyandotte's Lademan Insurance Agency, teamed up with friends Jason and Tina Emero of Grosse Ile to officially open Island …

Wyandotte's Why Not Costumes Is Closing

The costume and accessories store is going out of business after this Halloween season.

Why Not Costumes will be closing its doors in the near future. "I sadly have to announce that this will be our last Halloween," the store's voicemail says. "We are getting out of the business, I'm sorry to say." The store is hosting a clearance sale featuring all of its remaining stock. Some of the costumes are being sold for as low as what it used to cost to rent them. Appointments must be made to stop in and peruse the inventory. For more information, call 734-283-3305. What? this business couldn't make it even though Prop A and the H.R.P. exemption reduced their taxes paid to "just" $65,000 over the last 10 years and any future business at this location must $160,000 in property taxes over the next 10 years. I just can't understand why over 100 businesses sit vacant, aren't other business people dying to come and go broke in Wyandotte?   more ›

Classic cars and models were on hand for the salon's grand opening on Friday.

Wyandotte Man Chosen to Sell at Downtown Detroit Days

Giuseppe Palazzolo, who owns Common Threads Clothing, is among 20-some vendors at the show.

A Wyandotte native is one of 20-some vendors chosen to showcase their goods at Downtown Detroit Days, taking place through Saturday. Giuseppe Palazzolo, who owns Common Threads Clothing, is selling his wares on a site many people familiar with Detroit will fondly remember. Inspired by the original event, which began in the 1950s, Downtown Detroit Days takes place at 1208 Woodward, an empty lot that once housed J.L. Hudson's. The goal is to transform the property into a vibrant marketplace featuring the best Detroit- and Michigan-based brands, organizers said. Palazzolo, who moved to Detroit to attend law school at University of Detroit Mercy, said he's honored to be included. “I have had a passion for this city since I can remember and …

Expansion at Nanna's Kitchen Gets Initial OK

The popular eatery is planning to put an addition onto its southwest corner, upping its capacity by 66.

Wyandotte City Council members gave the initial green light Monday night to a proposed expansion at Nanna’s Kitchen. The plan calls for a 47-feet by 20-feet addition onto the southwest corner at the rear of the popular restaurant. Landscaping and a walkway are currently on the land, which is owned by the city. Restaurant officials are proposing to buy the land from the city and to hire Wyandotte’s D&A Home Improvement to oversee the expansion project. Council members voted unanimously Monday night to refer the matter to the city engineer and city attorney with a report due back to council in two weeks. "I don't think you'll have any objections from anybody here," Councilman James DeSana told Nanna's owner Steve Mikhail. Mayor Joseph …

Wyandotte's Nanna's Kitchen Looking to Expand

The popular eatery is planning to put an addition onto its southwest corner, upping its capacity by 58.

After more than two decades in Wyandotte, Nanna’s Kitchen is looking to expand its restaurant space. The plan calls for a 47-feet by 20-feet addition onto the southwest corner at the rear of the building. Landscaping and a walkway are currently on the land, which is owned by the city. Restaurant officials are proposing to buy the land from the city and to hire Wyandotte’s D&A Home Improvement to oversee the expansion project. “Nanna's Kitchen is a very wonderful business that has enhanced the downtown area for many years and to be able to expand would be beneficial to both the city of Wyandotte and the owner,” David Adamczyk of D & A Home Improvement wrote in a letter to city officials. Karen Mikhail, whose family owns the restaurant, said…
