Wyandotte Shops Offer Sales, Specials for Small Business Saturday

4 Her is offering a half-off deal, while Milkins Jewelers is offering a free cruise with a $1,199 purchase.

On the day after one of the busiest shopping days of the year known as Black Friday, owners of small, independent shops are hoping that customers are just as anxious to head out the next day with credit cards or cash in hand. Small Business Saturday aims to promote the "shop local" idea, with the intention of fueling money back into local economies by offering customers a choice to spend their money at places other than national retail chains. "Small Business Saturday is the day we celebrate the Shop Small movement to drive shoppers to local merchants across the U.S.," the project's Facebook page says. Jeanette Rinna worked for years as a manager for a national retail chain and said Black Friday was always the depressing part of the …

Happy Thanksgiving from Wyandotte Patch!

What are you most thankful for this year? Read on to find out what some of our readers had to say.

Happy Thanksgiving, Wyandotte. Whether you are celebrating by tuning into the 85th America's Thanksgiving Parade, feasting on a turkey, settling in for the Lions game, doing all three for a Detroit-area tradition or coming up with your own game plan, I hope you enjoy your day. Like many of you, I am thankful for having a family who loves me, for good health and opportunities to make each and every day count. I'm also thankful to be celebrating my first Thanksgiving with the Wyandotte Patch community. Having launched our site on Dec. 13, 2010, we're nearing our one-year anniversary. I'm grateful for you allowing us to bring you the news that matters about the city you care about. In the spirit of the holiday, we asked our readers what they …

Michigan Postcard: Turkeys Show up Early for Thanksgiving

A tom and hen visit a Rochester Hills home – for dinner?

Wild turkeys are common sight throughout Michigan, one that Rochester Hills resident Ruthann Bajorek welcomes. "One of the joys of living in Rochester Hills is the easy access to wildlife – though not always a blessing," Bajorek said. "These turkeys apparently misunderstood when we said we were having turkey for Thanksgiving. They showed up in our yard a little early for Thanksgiving dinner. What kind of wildlife have you spotted in your yard or neighborhood? To email this photo, just look for the EMAIL button above the headline. To print this photo, see PRINT above. To add a photo, click on "add your photos" under the photo. Do you have a nominee for Michigan Postcard? Nominate it here or email it to beth.valone@patch.com. Be sure to …

City offices, with the exception of police and fire, will be closed Thursday and Friday in observance of Thanksgiving. The weekly Monday night City Council meeting is canceled due to the holiday. The next meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Dec. 5 on the second floor of City Hall. Trash will not be picked up on Thursday, but will resume Friday with a one-day delay for the remainder of the week.

$100 up for Grabs Saturday in Downtown Wyandotte

The Wyandotte Downtown Development Authority is sponsoring a weekly giveaway till Christmas.

Want to win $100? The Wyandotte Downtown Development Authority is putting its money where its mouth is. It’s been preaching the importance of shopping locally for a long time and now is ready to reward those who do. For the next five weeks, one lucky downtown shopper will be chosen randomly each week to win $100 in gift cards to downtown Wyandotte businesses. Winners will receive five $20 gift cards. DDA Director Natalie Rankine said it’s an easy idea that works well in other communities. “If someone wins gift cards to five places, it gets their foot into stores they wouldn’t normally go to,” she said. “And everybody likes a contest.” There are three simple rules: “We’ll pre determine before going into the store that, say, the third person…

Countdown to Thanksgiving, Day 12: Is Your Table Set?

Tips for creating an enchanting tablescape that’s also comfortable.

To catch up on Megan Swoyer's first 11 steps of the “turkey day” planning process, read the full series.  There are dozens of torn-out magazine pages in my recipe files that don’t have recipes on them. Instead, the worn sheets showcase beautiful images and tips for the second (food is No. 1) most important key to a good meal: dining table ambiance. I come from the land of linger. My family sits at the table long after dessert is served, for coffee, after-dinner drinks, chitchat and big laughs. So the table décor, seating, etc. need to be as inviting as if we were sitting in front of the fireplace in the living room (which usually follows the table talk, before card games begin). I’ve been hosting Thanksgiving pretty regularly for the past …

What Are You Thankful For, Wyandotte?

As Thanksgiving approaches, Wyandotte Patch wants to know what you're thankful for.

Thanksgiving. Giving thanks. The turkey and mashed potatoes (we'll stop here to avoid the food coma already) are nice, but we know it's not the true purpose of the fourth Thursday of every November. So tell us, what are you thankful for? It might be something huge in your life or it could be that small thing that someone did that left a lasting impact. Leave it in the comments below. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

I am thankful to be a member of a wonderful family and to have a great group of friends. I'm thankful for the birth of my niece Sarah, who came into the world just three weeks ago, and made me an uncle for the first time. Also, I'm thankful for the chance to be a part of Patch, which has allowed me to work with a lot of great people and has helped me discover a lot about myself.   more ›

Countdown to Thanksgiving, Day 11: It's Tradition

Quirky, heartwarming traditions and thoughtful additions create a treasured holiday.

To catch up on Megan Swoyer's first 10 steps of the “turkey day” planning process, read the full series.  Thanksgiving is turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy. It’s pulling on warm sweaters and indulging on warm pies. It’s Jell-O, football, wine toasts, good china and whipped cream. But it’s also rutabagas and Neil Diamond music. Yep. On Nov. 24 the Chisholms of Huntington Woods tuck their forks into a not-exactly-popular-but-totally-traditional rutabaga dish, while the Cherry family of Macomb Township taps their toes to a special Neil Diamond tune.    It’s those quirky traditions and absolute must-dos that make Thanksgiving our own. My own “it’s-not-Thanksgiving-until-we-do-this” tradition involves a couple of wax figurines. Every year in my…

I have enjoyed your countdown to Thanksgiving. I expecially enjoyed this one about tradition. Holidays were always about tradition in my family. This will be the first one without Mom and surely not looking forward to it but know that we need to carry on her traditions so we will carry on. I will be thinking today about what tradition of Moms I will carry to the table Thursday.   more ›

Countdown to Thanksgiving, Day 10: Work Ahead

These handy tips from the turkey trenches will help you with the last few crucial days of preparation.

To catch up on Megan Swoyer's first nine steps of the “turkey day” planning process, read the full series.  Chef Jim Bologna of The Townsend Hotel in Birmingham could be considered a kitchen boy scout: He’s always prepared, especially when hosting a feast at home with family and friends. Here are some of his tips: Keep appetizers frozen until the big day: Bologna also is big on having cheese and crackers with some cured meats on hand — that’s “always a win and  they will hold for quite some time, and go great with wine.” Plan, plan, plan: “Write your menu so that most of your items can be done ahead,” he said. “Most if not all of the sides can be done a day or two beforehand.” Plan the oven space: This is important so that everything that …
