14 Wyandotte Women to be Honored at Black Tie Gala

The women are being honored for helping their community, their family or someone else.

Fourteen Wyandotte women will be honored at a Woman of the Year Gala, co-hosted by Women of Wyandotte and the Wyandotte Jaycees. The women are being honored for going above and beyond to help their community, their family or someone else. The honorees will be recognized during a Feb. 16 black tie gala at the Downriver Italian-American Hall, 646 Biddle. Doors open at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. and the awards presentation at 8 p.m. An afterglow party will be held at Portofino.  The honorees are: Tickets are $50 each and include a sit-down dinner catered by Silver Shores Waterfront, drinks, entertainment and an art auction.  For tickets, mail a check payable to Women of Wyandotte to P.O. Edna Kreger to be Honored with 'First Lady of Wyandotte Award'

She and her husband, William, known to many as Wyandotte's 'first family,' died hours apart from one another last month.

Known to many as half of Wyandotte's "first family," Edna Kreger will be honored Saturday for her many contributions to the city. She will be presented with the "First Lady of Wyandotte Award" during the Woman of the Year Gala on Saturday. The event is being co-hosted by Women of Wyandotte and the Wyandotte Jaycees at the Downriver Italian-American Hall. "Mrs. Kreger's family have graciously accepted the nomination and we look forward to honoring this great lady," event organizers said in a written statement. The Kregers also were honored during a special Valentine's Day show on WDIV-TV Channel 4 on Tuesday night. William Kreger, 97, died Jan. 4, and Edna Kreger, 96, died about 12 hours later on Saturday. Nominations Sought for 2013 Wyandotte Women of the Year

Winners will be honored during a weeklong celebration in February, culminating with a Feb. 16 gala.

Do you know of a special woman in Wyandotte? You've got just a few days to nominate her for the upcoming 2013 Wyandotte Women of the Year celebration. Two nonprofit organizations — Women of Wyandotte and the Wyandotte Jaycees — are looking for special women who have gone above and beyond to help their community, their family or someone else. Honorees must live in Wyandotte and be at least 18 years old. Nominations can be made by email to wow@wyan.org or by fax to 734-284-5566, attention: WOW. The deadline is Dec. 31. 3 Wyandotte Women Honored for Committment to Communty, Others

Group hands out three special awards named after significant women in Wyandotte's history.

In addition to handing out 10 Woman of the Year awards, members of Women of Wyandotte presented three women with special commendations Saturday night at the Wyandotte Arts Center. Rather than pinpointing certain women for having specific talents, WOW members opted instead to institute three special awards named after significant women in Wyandotte's history. Ellen Van Alstyne was involved in a multitude of community events, including the Tuesday Study Club in which she was voted Ms. Loved Member. Ella Bishop was a community organizer and volunteer. Saturday's event at the Wyandotte Arts Center featured 10 women honored by Women of Wyandotte and two young women honored by the Wyandotte Jaycees.

A dozen women were honored Saturday night at the Wyandotte Arts Center as part of the Woman of the Year Gala, put on by Women of Wyandotte and the Wyandotte Jaycees. Each of the women was recognized for their hard work and dedication to the community, to charity and to their families. The women were treated like stars for the evening, as they arrived in limousines and walked a red carpet into the gala. That came, of course, after they had their hair done at Teezers Hair Salon and manicures perfected at 3152 Studio. Women of Wyandotte honored 10 local women with a Woman of the Year Award. Maiani, Rinna Nominated for Jaycees Award

The two women are the Wyandotte Jaycees' nominees for the Outstanding Young Woman of the Year Award, which will be presented during the Wyandotte Women of the Year event.

The Wyandotte Jaycees have announced that Megan Maiani and Jeanette Rinna are the nominees for the Outstanding Young Woman of the Year Award. The award will be given during the Wyandotte Women of the Year event on Saturday at the Wyandotte Arts Center. Maiani is a children’s counselor for Camp Quality with American Cancer Society, and she has worked annually with the Wyandotte Relay for Life. Maiani is pursuing a nursing degree at the Mercy College of Nursing, and she is serving her internship at Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center in Dearborn. "Ms. Maiani has a strong motivation in making sure that her community and the children in the community have healthy future to pass along her passion," the Jaycees said in a written statement.
