What's a Backwoods Barbie?

Backwoods Barbie brand creator and Roosevelt High School graduate Nicole Maldonado, 20, of Wyandotte, described a Backwoods Barbie like this:

"An online community for good hearted country people around the world."

Maldonado created the Backwoods Barbie Facebook page on May 14. About four months later, she's garnered 40,467 likes and counting. The page gets regular visits from people across the globe including people in Australia.

To give you some perspective just how popular Maldonado's Facebook page has become, here are some popular local pages and their number of likes as of Friday afternoon:

  • City of Wyandotte had 2,728 likes.
  • Wyandotte Patch has 4,289 likes.
  • Southeast Michigan country band Annabelle Road had 3,999 likes.
  • WXYZ Detroit had 86,798 likes.
  • The Detroit News had 29,493 likes.
Maldonado said she was unaware of a recent Dolly Parton song titled "Backwoods Barbie" when she created the brand. She credits the song for some of the popularity of her page. She believes people who were "Googling" the song stumbled upon her page and liked what they saw.

"They realize what it is once they get there," Maldonado said. "I've had some people ask me if I'm affiliated with Dolly Parton, but I'm like, 'No, it was by accident.'"

Backwoods Barbie popularity doesn't stop at Facebook likes. Maldonado said she makes money, too. She sells Backwoods Barbie t-shirts for between $10 and $15. To date, Maldonado has sold more than 1,000 t-shirts.

Maldonado said people who visit her page use it to mingle and share ideas and interests. Users can even do some online dating.

Maldonado plans to attend the occupational therapy program at Saginaw Valley State University in the fall. She, her sister Natalie, 17, and 17 other of her friends will continue to manage the site providing fresh content and interacting with users.

"When I do move to Saginaw, I kinda want to open my own little store there," Maldonado said.

Backwoods Barbie also has a strong Twitter following of about 10,000 followers. Maldonado tweets pictures of new t-shirt designs and things she thinks her followers might enjoy.
