Archdiocese Must Approve Plan for Catholic Church Merger in Wyandotte

A plan for the merger of parishes at St. Stanislaus and Our Lady of Mount Carmel is expected to detail the future of the two buildings.

The Archdiocese of Detroit had not received a plan Friday detailing the futures of the St. Stanislaus and Our Lady of Mount Carmel buildings, according to Joe Kohn, Archdiocese of Detroit director of communication.

While there was not a specific deadline for the plan, a plan must be approved by the Archdiocese before an active merger of the two parishes can be completed. The deadline for the merger is July 1, according to documents provided by officials at Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

"At this point, the Archdiocese has not received plans from the parish representatives and pastor as to what will happen to the church building(s), i.e. how and whether they will be used," Kohn said. "So at this point, that is in the hands of the parish leaders and representatives."

Kohn said, lay representatives of both St. Stanislaus and Our Lady of Mount Carmel have been meeting for more than a year to formulate a plan for the merger.

Kohn expects the plan to be completed within the next couple of weeks.

Kohn said, the Archdiocese won't speculate or comment on the plan until both parishes announce its completion and submission.

Father Walter Ptak declined comment Friday afternoon.
